Stórurð (Boulder Hollow)
East Iceland´s best kept secret.
Around 16 km hike. Traverses 500 m of elevation. 6-7 hours.
We drive from Borgarfjörður for 10 min and start hiking from Vatnskarð pass (h.431m), we start the day´s hike by going up and crossing the mountain Geldingafjall/Geldingaskörð (h.640m). We will have great views over Njarðvík, Fljótsdalshérað valley and the black sandy beach of Héraðsflói bay. Then we go down into Stórurð, an expanse of enormous rocks intersected by small river. Calm turquoise-coloured basins of icy water lie hidden among the huge boulders, often with flat banks of short tender green grass. Returning from this amazing place we walk along the Dyrfjöll (Door mountains) down the valley Urðardalur, to the main road where we will be picked up and drive back to Borgarfjörður.
You will need: Good hiking shoes (no sneakers please!), warm and comfortable clothes, rain clothes, water bottle and provisions for the day.
